Justina passed away peacefully a few days ago. Sickness is unknown. In fact I was told she had just left SIA. She was not married and passed away with her siblings around her.

Durian white coffee

I don't know how many people had tried this durian white coffee. My friend's mother had been drinking this coffee for a long time. She died recently and my friend who is 70 years old is also drinking this coffee everyday. He claimed that perhaps his mother was able to live for so long (died at 95) partly due to drinking this coffee.
When I heard this story, I headed to the NTUC supermarket and got myself a bag containing 15 pkts ($7.90).
The taste is quite good and authentic. But if you do not like durian then don't try it.

Home cooked ramen

This ramen was cooked by my wife this morning. The slices of pork are known as Japanese char siew. They are different from the Chinese char siew which are usually red in color and roasted or grilled. Japanese char siew does not have coloring added to the meat. Nevertheless, this bowl of ramen is superb!

We ate this ramen at Suntec City  last year and they cost us a bomb. It's not that we aren't appreciative but the taste is not much better than the one above which does not cost more than $3 a bowl.

18 Chefs @ Nex Mall

The sirloin steak set which is $15.80 + isn't as good as before. It does not come with the spaghetti anymore. The cheese baked rice is quite nice ($8) and the spicy double cheese fries is yummy ($7).
This is my third visit to 18 Chefs and I am rather unenthusiastic about it.

Can Toast Box please explain ??

Toast Box kaya butter set which cost $4.90 is now 50c more ($5.40). The reason, I was told was that the hot drink (coffee or tea) is now served in a bigger cup (bottom pic). It was revised due to "complaints" from customers the original white cup (top pic) was small. But what about customers who do not want such a big cup?...."Oh you still have to pay $5.40 instead of the usual $4.90" said the staff.

Curry yong tau fu for brunch

I am fortunate that the famous Lim's Yong Tau Fu has a stall near my home. The Q is usually long and the waiting time is about 20 minutes during meal hours. I would usually be there before or long after lunch period so the Q is shorter. The YTF is good and this morning I had the curry YTF for a change. Six pieces and a bowl of rice or bee hoon or noodle etc cost $4. Add $1 more if you like to have the curry gravy or the Thai tom yam soup.

Men's toilet in Japanese shopping mall

Recently, I visited a toilet located in a shopping mall in Japan and was so impressed with the cleanliness of the toilet that I decided to take some photos of it.
In Singapore, the toilets in the shopping malls are generally filthy even with the cleaners around to clean them periodically. Of course, the cleanliness of public toilets here are worse and no different from a third world country.

Prices up almost 20% in 2 weeks

We went back to this restaurant for the Tim Sum and was surprised to find the prices of the items were up by $1 per dish. We ordered that same 5 dishes 2 weeks ago and the bill came to $30 but today the damage was $35!
What a shame because they did not even display the price list of each item.

There is so much fuss about the MCs thing in cabin crew following the death of a leading stewardess while stopping in SFO. Some cabin crew and ex cabin crew placed the blame on the lss's death due her reluctance to report sick for her flight due to fear of being penalized by SIA.
SIA does not penalize its crew for reporting sick unless it is excessive like more than 28 days per year. Each crew are allowed up to 28 days of MCs per year without being penalized (without pay deduction). But for promotion, one who has lesser days of MC has a better chance of promotion if all things being equal. I hope this would clear any doubt about whether SIA penalizes it crew due to MCs.

Cabin crew MCs or medical leave

A reporter got in touch with me regarding the MCs thing in cabin crew. If you may recall a leading stewardess of 16 years with the airline died in her SFO hotel room recently and many believe she was sick but too scared to resort to taking MC due to the company's policy. Ever since her death, there has been a spate of talks and discussions in the social media regarding SIA's attitude towards crew who report sick for work. The reporter wanted to verify whether all that had been said about SIA regarding the MCs were true or not. Please visit the other blog for more information.

Had lunch with my RI cohorts at City Square Mall this afternoon. On the right hand side is our ex-school teacher. He has been living in Canada for a couple of years.

Below average hawker food in Ang Mo Kio, SG

Both the braised duck rice and fried kway teow are sub-standard. The duck dish was $12 and kway teow was $4. The stalls are at block 409 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10. The name of the duck stall is something like Leng Kee and the kway teow is Bendeemer Road (side by side to each other).
I will not recommend anyone eating from those 2 stalls.
