Today, I went to Changi Hospital for post cataract operation checkup. The eye pressure has dropped to 17 which is considered normal. It was 23 the day after the ops.
Travelling time to the hospital and back was 2 hours. Waiting time was 2 hours but consultation time was only 10 minutes.
After consultation, I headed to the coffee shop near the Simei MRT Station and had charsiew/siew yok rice ($3). Cabbage and chicken feet soup was free flow at no cost. After lunch, I ordered a cup of kopi O ($1.80) at ToastBox which was about 10 meters away. The kopi O was about the same standard as the one which was sold at the coffee shop ($1). Promised myself never to order any kopi from Simei ToastBox again. For dessert, I went up to the upper level of Eastpoint Mall (think it was Food Junction) and had a whole coconut ($3.50). The meat was jelly-like (too soft) and the juice was sourish. Again I told myself never to have the coconut again at this mall.
Finally, I had a haircut from a Malay barber shop (same level as the Food Junction). I was rather shock that a haircut is now $12 instead of $10!

A plateful of home cooked spaghetti and a glass of freshly made honey lime juice for lunch. In fact, I had the kaya toast set from Toast Box this morning for my breakfast.

Today's unhealthy but shiok meals

Besides, the mee rebus and the satay bak kuah, I ate 2 pieces of Bengawan Solo kueh lapis and marble cake. Today, I really went all out to have these junk food. The bak kuah was the tastier of all. I bought 600 grams and ate about 4 slices in one go and kept the rest in the fridge. This was the first time I've ever heard or tasted the satay bak kuah. It's on promotion and for the 600 grams it cost only $18 which is rather inexpensive.

New Seletar Kopi@ Greenwich is now opened

We visited the old Seletar Kopi (Kopitiam). It was closed for about 4 months as business wasn't good. The new owner took over but although the name has changed the place is still the same. Not much renovation was done and there are a few same food stalls there. Our favourite Ban Mian stall was there and so was the Yong Tau Foo stall, Korean food stall and the Chicken rice stall. The only new addition was the Thai Food stall (closed today which is Monday)which we understand is selling delicious Thai cuisine.
We ordered Ban Mian ($4 formerly was $4.40) and after that had the Old Chung Kee's Cheesy fried chicken ($2.50) which was tasty. Then we proceeded for our tea at Toast Box (next door).

Ba-Chor Mee and Toast Box Mee Goreng Set

Today, I had ba-chor mee for breakfast, niku jaga for lunch and mee goreng for dinner. Admittedly, except for the niku jaga, my meals were unhealthy. But then I craved for hawker food so badly.
Hopefully tomorrow's meals will be healthier.

Mee Rebus Set and a chat at Toast Box

I was at Toast Box and ordered the Mee Rebus set. It was quite pricey at $7.30c. The Mee was not as soft as I expected but the gravy and coffee O was as good as before.
I knew the cleaner Ah San who at one time was working at a coffee shop nearby. We chatted for a while. San is 65 years old but his movement was quite slow. He told me he would be quitting end of the year. He is a cancer survivor.
As San and I was chatting ( the place was quite deserted), another fellow, a customer, joined in our conversation. He told us he was 75 years old and he looked fit and trimmed. When asked what was he working in his younger days, he replied he was a fisherman. His fitness was due to the hard he had to endure as a fisherman, he told us.
The food, atmosphere and people at Toast Box was nice. I enjoyed every bit of my time there this afternoon.

Mee Goreng Set from Toast Box

I went shopping and came across this menu at Toast Box. I am not sure if it is a new item but I've never seen it before. Dying for my regular cup of coffee, I decided to try this "Mee Goreng Set" or Fried Noodle Set. It comes with a drink of your choice and I chose black coffee.
Fortunately, although a little spicy, the mee goreng and the coffee turned out to be good. So that's my dinner for today ($5.30).

Can Toast Box please explain ??

Toast Box kaya butter set which cost $4.90 is now 50c more ($5.40). The reason, I was told was that the hot drink (coffee or tea) is now served in a bigger cup (bottom pic). It was revised due to "complaints" from customers the original white cup (top pic) was small. But what about customers who do not want such a big cup?...."Oh you still have to pay $5.40 instead of the usual $4.90" said the staff.

Today's lunch was the Hainanese curry pork cutlet rice and dinner was just a simple soft French toast (with condense milk) set at Toast Box. The rice meal was not too bad considering it was only $4.50. The soft French set was delicious and the tea was delightful ($6).

Of fishball noodles, kopi etc on a Saturday

Woke up early and long to have my breakfast of fishball noodles and kopi O. Was in a dilemma because the noodles stall is at a coffee shop and the kopi is at Toast Box. They are about  10 minutes apart from each other. I do not like the kopi O at the coffee shop. The kopi O is not worth drinking at all. So I rather walk another 10 minutes to Toast Box to have my kopi O. After that it's a 7 minute walk home.
An elderly lady at Toast Box told me that in the early days, most of the kopi sold at the heartland coffee shops were as good as the ones at Toast Box. I agreed with her because the standard of the kopi in the coffee shops have deteriorated over the years.
A few nights ago, I was invited by an elderly couple friends to dinner. Although they are wealthy people, they are unassuming and humble. Besides, they are very generous too. As usual, I always enjoy their company.
As of yesterday, Zika has infected 16 pregnant women in Singapore. However, according to the health authorities none of their unborn babies have microcephaly (babies born with smaller heads).
In total, there are currently 387 confirmed cases of people with Zika.
This year we are fortunate not to have the haze blown over from Indonesia. It usually occur around this time of the year. We are grateful to the Indonesian government for giving us the "opportunity" to breathe some fresh air.
It looks like we are going to have a warm humid Saturday. Hope we'll get some rain to cool down the temperature.

People in Singapore infected by the Zika virus has risen to 82 by yesterday. The areas most affected are Sims Drive/Aljunied, Kallang Way and Paya Lebar Way.
USA has joined a growing list of countries like Australia, UK, Taiwan etc warning their citizens especially the pregnant women or those wanting to get pregnant to avoid travelling to Singapore.
Zika can cause women to give birth to babies with smaller than usual heads.
So far there is no panic among Singaporean regarding the Zika thing. However, one infectious disease specialist warned that the virus could spread to half of the nation.
Zika, like dengue is spread by the Aedes mosquitoes.

My breakfast at the coffee shop

Got up very early this morning and waited till the coffee shop nearby opened its door for business. Had the fish ball noodles and my cup of kopi O. It has been a while since I last visited this place. Noodles remain at $3.50 and kopi at $1. The place is air-conditioned but one may dine outside which is non air-conditioned. There is a section outside for smoking.

Lunch was Chicken Chop set@ Toast Box

Yesterday when I was at Toast Box (Greenwich area) they didn't have the chicken chop set. Today, I tried the one at Seletar Mall and it's available ($7.80). The donut ($1.70)was an extra treat from Bread Talk. The food was average and the coffee, a disappointment.

Had pineapple and banana for dinner. Wish I had some Hokkaido melon from Japan or sweet and juicy watermelon from Taiwan.

Toast Box's kopi is better than OldTown

Not satisfied with the so-so OldTown kopi and food, we proceeded to the Toast Box for our kopi/chicken chop and Hainanese set lunch. Price was reasonable ($12).
Phew! Toast Box didn't disappoint us, good as usual.
