Lunch and dessert

The dessert kakigori is a type of ice-kachang sold during the hot seasons. This is the green-tea kakigori with kachang and ice cream as its toppings. Needless to say, it is delicious.

Sushi and mentai pan

I got the tray of 24 pieces of sushi at half the price from a supermarket near my house. The usual price was 1399 Yen or S$18 and at a 50% discount it was $9. It was delicious and fresh and my wife and I had it for dinner. We also got a tray for my in-laws.

The French loaves with mentai is one of my favorites too. It is known as mentai pan in Japanese. Mentai is fish roe and pan is bread in Japanese. I got them at 20% discount.

Happy birthday okasan

Today, we celebrate my mum-in-law's birthday with sushi and a birthday cake. She is 81 and still as fit as a fiddle. My dad-in-law is 84 and still going strong. They are very nice people and although I can't communicate much with them due to my limited Japanese, we get along well.

We had sushi for breakfast plus a plate of fresh salad and miso soup. The sushi was purchased from a supermarket in the early morning so as to make sure it is fresh.

Had sushi for lunch

We started the day by having salad.
The temperature is a comfortable 23C at 12 noon. In the night, it is usually around 19C. It's still springtime and we are enjoying the lovely weather.
In the afternoon, we went to eat sushi. The sushi may not be the best in terms of taste but it was quite cheap. The damage for the 4 of us was S$40.

Sashimi and sushi from Japan

My relatives who are touring Japan WhatsApp me the above photos. The sashimi and sushi looked delicious. It's nothing like having these dishes in Japan especially during the cold winter months where the fishes are caught and prepared fresh.

Sushi and Pad Thai

On the left is the picture of sushi and chicken nuggets which my mum-in-law sent us from Japan. She bought them from a supermarket. I had tasted the sushi before when I was in Japan and it was worth every yen. It was fresh and delicious and only cost 1,000 Yen which is about S$12.50.
The picture on the right is Pad Thai, a Thai dish prepared at home by my wife. She substituted the glass noodles with udon and tasted just as good as the one we ate at the Thai restaurant.

Sushi Tei @ Tampines 1

There were 3 of us at Sushi Tei (Tampines 1) for lunch. We ordered a bowl of Ramen, Salmon+rice, Ungani + rice, a salad and 2 plates of 4 pieces salmon sushi. The food was well below our expectation and costly too. They charged for the wet paper towel (20c) as well $1.20 for a cup of Japanese tea.
Since the food wasn't good and pricey, we promised never to visit any Sushi Tei anymore.

Home-made futomaki or sushi roll from Japan

Futomaki is a type of rolled sushi that is known for its large size and careful balance of ingredients. People who think of sushi as just raw fish are often very surprised by the care and artistry that goes into these rolls. They are usually filled with different colored vegetables and may not even contain fish at all. Chefs design futomaki to be both delicious and pleasing to the eye, and they often choose ingredients for how well they balance with each other both in taste and looks.

Haze report

The haze PSI as at 10 am is 149 which is in the mid unhealthy range. I wonder how long more we could go on with our normal daily lives. The haze is hardzous and menacing and we hope Indonesia could do something about it. Every year during the dry season it is the same story since 1997. People are getting sicker and the economy is suffering.

Jack of all trades, master of none

I am a jack of all trade so to speak but master of none. When I retired from the airlines, I went into the house moving industry. Bought myself a van and created a few blogs. In no time my partner and I was having so much business that we couldn't cope. Due to the size of the van, we could only do "room" moving. We moved items from a room to another room. We don't have space for big items. The fees was cheap, charging $40 to $60 for a trip. Our clients were mostly students from overseas, foreign workers and others.
I remember one Sunday we were able to complete 5 assignments. At the end of the day, we almost collapsed. Both of us weren't young. We were both 63 years old and you can imagine how tough it was for us to carry heavy and sometimes bulky items and moved them from one place to another.
A lady client of ours was shocked to see us appearing at her place to help her move. " Oh my god, I expect to see 2 young men but instead 2 old men. Can you both do the job?" she asked. Of course after the job was done she was so pleased that she gave us a small tip.
We took the moving job as a challenge and not so much for the money. After 2 years in the business, we closed shop.
My partner ventured into the real estate business and I started my pet business. Recently due to the poor housing market my partner closed shop. I am still at my pet business, importing and exporting pets like dogs, cats, rabbits etc for people. We call it pet relocation business.

Oh no sushi dinner again?

We do not seem to be tired of eating sushi. Tonight's dinner was sushi again. We did not snap any photos and so used the ones we took yesterday or day before. However, from the 3 receipts (over 3 times we were at Sushi Express)you may think we are sushi junkies. In fact, we are and had eaten few times before we took photos of the receipts. I've developed some rashes and skin itchiness on my legs and body. I think it may be due to the oily and deep fried food like fries, buggers, char kway teows, laksa, curries etc that I've consumed over the years. So it's pay-back time and I am trying to quit eating those unhealthy food and concentrate on food like sushi and sashimi which aren't oily.
