He committed suicide

A few days ago, one of my schoolmates committed suicide. He was a bright student but quite serious in his demeanour. We do not know why he took his life, after all he was quite well to do. At the time of his death, he owned a house that's worth 8 to 10 million bucks.  Therefore, we concluded that his death wasn't due to financial reason. Then, why would he resort to such drastic action? We are puzzled.
Later at his wake, we were told he was suffering from severe depression for a number of years.

I gave you an idea why people become overly sensitive as they get older a few weeks ago.

Now, here's why people like your friend commit suicide.

Because contrary to popular belief, money doesn't guarantee true happiness.

Money helps you buy the things that you like but purchasing these things only gives you a temporary high.

Once that feeling is over, you go back to feeling like crap until one day, when you can't take it,you decide to end your life.

Those around you don't realise how empty you feel inside because when they meet you,you give them the impression that you're fine.At the same, just like many Singaporeans, they equate wealth with happiness so if you have money, they assume you're happy.

They only realise it when they get the call about your death and when they attend your funeral, they start discussing plausible reasons for your suicide.

When they go home they start reflecting on their own life and they keep doing it until one day they realise, they too are living a lie and suicide becomes an attractive proposition then.

This is a common thing, especially for those with very little to do in a society guided by wealth where the elderly collect cardboards to survive/exercise.

What should you friend have done?

Keep himself busy by surrounding himself with people who are less fortunate than him so he will realise how lucky he is. When you help others, you take your mind off your own problems.

Never stay alone doing nothing for long periods or your mind will start to wander.

What was that saying again?

An idle mind is the devil's playground.

Now you know why he took his own life.

Yup this guy did not like to socialise even with us his schoolmates. He was a reserved type prefer drinking kopi alone in Chinatown. Perhaps he had family problems...there is no way we could find out as he kept things to himself.
