Monitor lizard near my place

Encountered this 1.5 meter monitor lizard while on my morning walk. This is the first time I have seen such a huge lizard near my place. It is harmless I was told. It feeds on small animals like squirrels, mice, smaller reptiles eggs, fish etc. Some eat vegetation and fruits although most are carnivorous.
There is a small river nearby and I think this lizard lives around there. I was also told it rarely attacks humans unless provoked.

OMG this is such a common thing in Malaysia.

We call the lizard "biawak" and it can be eaten.

In some famous parts of KL,other than biawak you can find other exotic animals
which can be cooked on the spot (bat, monkey, turtle, tortoise, squirrel, python).

The Chinese love them especially those with asthma or other respiratory diseases.
